Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers

Wiz Khalifa. What more can I say? He's made it, or has he?

Ever since the release of the chart-topping unofficial Pittsburgh Anthem and what most would call his breakthrough single (and also the first official single off his new album), 'Black and Yellow', Wiz has had high expectations.

When the 23 year old announced the release date for his new album, 'Rolling Papers', his already large fan base grew and anticipation was certainly high.

After a slew of highly successful singles like 'Roll Up', 'The Race' and 'No Sleep', you definitely weren't alone if you had a strong feel of excitement. I know I was.

However (and I say that with a strong and legitimate feeling of disappointment), when I got my hands on the album and listened to what Wiz had to say, I felt letdown. I didn't feel like I gained anything from listening to the album.

The first words of the opening track, 'When I'm Gone', are "And they say all I rap about is bitches and champagne, you would to if every night you seeing the same thing" At what point do those particular topics get, dare I say, boring? After hearing these words I thought I was going to listen to an album that ultimately proved the haters wrong, but I was wrong. Instead I heard a bit about his bitches and a bit about his money, mixed in with a bit about his weed. Then again, that is the image Wiz Khalifa has created for himself. He's young, fly and confident. Who doesn't like that?

The album isn't a complete flop though. It's just, the best songs on the album were all released as singles and the rest of the album just falls short. It features only three other rappers, those being Too $hort, Currensy and Chevy Woods. The production team includes the likes of E. Dan mostly, but there is a strong contribution from Big Jerm, Benny Blanco, Pop Wansel, Jim Jonsin and of course Stargate, the guys who brought us 'Black and Yellow' and Wiz's other recent singles.

I hope my review of 'Rolling Papers' was informative, be sure to tell us what you think about it once you get your hands on it.

Keep it banging.

Lasers

One of the few advantages of living in Australia is getting Lupe Fiasco's new album earlier than the rest of the world.

The much anticipated (and delayed) third studio album of Chicago-native Lupe Fiasco was released on 4th March 2011 and is entitled Lasers. It was first announced way back in 2009 and wasn't given a solid release date until late 2010. In an interview with Australian radio station Triple J, he stated: "It's one of the sadder parts of being on a major record label. At a certain point, it's out of your hands."

Lupe Fiasco.

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is by far one of the most underrated rappers and producers at the moment. He is one of very few rappers these days who are actually rapping for a purpose.

Born and raised in Chicago, he generated an interest in Hip-Hop after originally disliking the genre for its vulgarity. He started recording songs in his father's basement and joined an underground group called Da Pak but disbanded shortly after its inception.

Fiasco soon met fellow rapper Jay-Z, who helped him sign a deal with Atlantic Records. In 2006, Fiasco released his debut album Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor on the label and it received commercial and critical acclaim. He then released his second album, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, in December of 2007. His single 'Superstar' became a hit and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. His upcoming third studio album, Lasers, is slated for a March 8 release.

Lupe Fiasco has a certain knack for creating lyrical masterpieces that have a meaning behind them that's relevant to today's social and political issues. This is another reason why I, and many others, think he is so underrated. His rhymes are so damn catchy and his flow is so smooth.

Hopefully with the release of his new album, Lasers, he will also gain the respect and stardom that I think he deserves and get him up there with the likes of Kanye West and such.

Tell us what you think. Do you think Lupe is one of the most underrated rappers out there? Or do you think he has been given his fair share of fame?

Keep it banging.

Twitter.

You either love it or hate it.

As I'm writing this now I'm being exposed to the useless (and quite simply annoying) Twilight series. For those that don't know Twilight is originally a best selling book about a love story between a human girl and a lifeless vampire (oh and a so called 'hot' werewolf boy)

What really annoys me is the back and forth love story. "I love him, no now I love him, wait now I love him", for crying out loud MAKE UP YOUR MIND! Choose one and stick to it, what is so hard about it?

Of course the women reading this have already unsubscribed and the men are inches close to subscribing but here me out. Of course a little love story is alright but not when it drags on for hours on end. What can be so hard about choosing honestly?

Let me know what you think, give us a yell. Catch you later.

Keep it Banging,

Best Hip-Hop/Rap Albums of 2010 (My Opinion).

Pt. 2 - Albums

"B.o.B Presents the Adventures of Bobby Ray", B.o.B's first studio album release, and it was a good one. It went straight to number 1 on the US Billboard 200, US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US Billboard Rap Albums. The 12-track album, that was almost entirely produced by B.o.B himself, featured some very big names on it, and when I say big I mean Eminem, Hayley Williams, Lupe Fiasco, Playboy Tre, Janelle Monae, Rivers Cuomo and who could forget Bruno Mars? Some big names on the production team included T.I, The Smeezingtons, B.o.B himself, Alex da Kid and Dr Luke.

"Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty" is the solo debut album of Outkast-member Big Boi. This was a very good debut release for someone that already had a large fanbase. It peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard 200, US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US Billboard Rap Albums. The 15-track album featured some big names in the form of Jamie Foxx, B.o.B, Gucci Mane, George Clinton, Too Short, Janelle Monae, T.I and Yelawolf. On the production side of things, Big Boi's name comes up a lot as well as Maylay, Lil Jon, Andre 3000 and Organized Noise.

Ice Cube's 9th studio album "I am the West" was somewhat of a disappointment for those hardcore Ice Cube fans. The album sold 22,000 in the first week of being released, and as of November 7th 2010 it had sold 44,000 units. In my opinion I thought it was actually worthy of more, there is some solid competition these days. The 18-track album features fellow west-coast rappers Jayo Felony, WC, Young Maylay and others. Producers include Doughboy, Hallway Productionz, T-Miz and JIGG among others.

"Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager" is the second studio released by Kid Cudi. If Kid Cudi hadn't already forged his style on the music industry, then after this album I believe he has, and that style is to be different. That's why I and many other people out there love Kid Cudi and what he's about. The 17-track album peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard 200, and number 1 on both the US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the US Billboard Rap Albums. The album features a few big names, these include Cee Lo Green, Kanye West, GLC, Mary J. Blige and Cage among others. Members of the production team include The Smeezingtons, Emile, No I.D, Kid Cudo himself, Dot da Genius and a few others.

"No Mercy" from T.I, his seventh studio album and perhaps his best. One of his best, at least. T.I himself said "This is the most significant return from incarceration that the game has had since 'All Eyez on Me'". The album peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard 200, number 1 on both the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the US Billboard Top Rap Albums, and peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Top Digital Albums. The album featured some heavy players on it, a few guys (and girl) by the name of Drake, Eminem, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera, Pharrel and Trey Songz. On the production side of things, names like Kanye West, Dr. Luke, The Neptunes and Alex da Kid start to pop up.

"Last Train to Paris" from Diddy is his 5th studio album and was one of the biggest releases of 2010. It also introduces us to his Hip-Hop/R&B collective 'Dirty Money'. This wasn't one of the biggest releases of the year in terms of chart position, although peaking at number 7 on the US Billboard 200 and number 3 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop isn't too bad, but if you take a look at the featured guest vocals you will realise that this is a big album. Those guest vocalists include Swizz Beatz, Chris Brown, Lil' Wayne, Drake, Skylar Grey, Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Trey Songz, Grace Jones, T.I and even the late, great Notorious B.I.G. Producers include Jay-Z, Swizz Beats, Diddy himself, Alex da Kid, Sea Garrett, Hollywood Hotsauce and Mario Winans.

That leaves just one more on my list and arguably the best one of the lot. Kanye West's 5th studio album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and without a doubt his magnum opus. This was exactly what Mr. West needed. Amid all of the controversy surrounding him, he releases musical perfection that essentially screams "FUCK YOU" to all of his haters (not that he had't said that already). Peaking at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, US Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US Billboard Rap Albums. When his dark lyrical themes and his luxurious musical style where added together, a lyrical masterpiece was created. Featuring on the 13-track classic is Kid Cudi, Jay-Z, Raekwon, Pusha-T, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Swizz Beatz, Bon Iver and John Legend. Production was handled by Kanye West himself, No I.D, Jeff Bhasker, The RZA and Mike Dean.

Well that concludes my 2-part 'review' of the best Hip-Hop/Rap mixtapes and albums of 2010, I hope you enjoyed it.

Which do you think was the best of 2010? Maybe I didn't mention your vote or maybe you disagree me.

Keep it banging.

Best Hip-Hop/Rap Mixtapes of 2010 (My Opinion).

2010 was a great year for Hip-Hop and Rap. In this 2-part post I will be going over some of the best mixtapes and albums of 2010 (my opinion).

Pt. 1 - Mixtapes

B.o.B backed up is early 2010 jump to stardom with his 16-track mixtape "No Genre". This was a very solid release and I think could've even made a just as solid profit. It heavily features fellow Atlanta rapper T.I and other well-known artists Bun B, Playboy Tre, Young Dro among others make appearances.

Jay Rock, the Watts native, released his first mixtape on Black Friday, and was appropriately titled "Black Friday". Remember way back in October of 2008, Jay Rock released a single that featured Lil' Wayne and will.i.am? We knew he had potential, and this 13-track mixtape really proves it. Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar feature heavily on most of the tracks.

Wale's jam-packed, 21-track, Sienfeld-themed mixtape titled "More about Nothing" should most definately have something for all fans of hip-hop, and is essential to those fans of Wale. "More about Nothing" is mixed by DJ Omega and features an assortment of producers, featuring Cool & Dre, Bassheads, and Kosmik, just to name a few.

Who do you think had the best Hip-Hop/Rap Mixtape of 2010?
Stay tuned for Part 2.

Keep it banging.
